TITLES POST + VODCAST
LESSONS x3 THURSDAY 20TH, COMPLETED ON BLOG FOR WEDS 26TH OCT
Key Research Resource: blog tag; artofthetitle.com
Do a complete breakdown of the titles of 1 recent (2000-now) film, preferably a Warp or WT film. Start with a blog post [TITLES1: Analysis of 3 Films (if you've already done titles posts, look at the numbering)] in which you:
  • screenshot EVERY title in the opening sequence of ONE film
  • discuss the semiotics of the font ((sans-)serif? colour? size? case? positioning? animation?); is there any font variation?
  • what does this suggest (signify) about the likely primary target audience and the (sub- or hybrid) genre(s)?
  • what language is used for different titles (eg distinguishing companies)?
  • what duration are titles on screen for, ie the time from the first to the last?
Next, compare to at least 2 more films. You don't need to screenshot or detail these so extensively, but do provide clear illustration to back up your points. You are gathering evidence to support your conclusions on how titles function and are designed, which will support your own choices. Also evidence further research from the website artofthetitle.com

The comparison, and wider research, will inform a clear summary of titles conventions, in the form of a vodcast in a separate post (TITLES2: Research Summary Vodcast) addressing:
  • the typical order of titles, and the range (how many? which specific roles?) of titles typically included
  • the time span they typically cover (you may argue there is no clear convention on this)
  • the language used, especially as regards companies and the director
  • common variations of design within a single film's titles: case, sizing, colour, animation, positioning etc
  • any specific ideas or potential influences you have gained from your research
  • evidence (screenshots!) of how your re-edited microdrama accurately and precisely reflects the expected titles conventions, and an overview of the semiotics of your titles for this
