I highly commend the web page 'Nine top tips for Media students'. From the people behind theory.org.uk, its worth a read!

Accessing your files in F6

A quick reminder on this: EVERYTHING you save on the Macs should be saved into a folder named 'FORENAME SURNAME 0910' on the external hard drives (LACIE). You often have to initially save your work on the Mac itself, but before you log off this should be copied into your LACIE folder, and the file on the Mac hard drive deleted.
If you're in a group for any work, you need to change the permissions so that everyone can access it. By default, only the person logged in when a file is created can access it, untill...
  1. Using FINDER (the blue/white face icon on the bottom left of the screen), find your actual file
  2. this needs to be in a named folder on the LACIE!!!
  3. click on it once to highlight the file
  4. hold in the CTRL button and click again (this is like right-clicking on a PC)
  5. click on GET INFO from the list that appears
  6. at the very bottom of the list that now appears you'll find 'PERMISSIONS'
  7. click on the arrow beside DETAILS and change all permissions to 'READ and WRITE'
If you do this, it won't matter is someone is ill/gets eaten by an alien on the way to school; you won't be reliant on one person logging in but should all be able to access the file now.

It is extremely important that you do this, ensuring you delete all your files from the Mac itself once you have - and emptying the trash in iMovie/Final Cut (which can be several GigaBytes), otherwise the Macs run out of memory and basically cease to function.
